Impact 90/300: What does it mean to be a Black artist?

In ArtCenter's 90-year history there have only been about 300 Black alumni.* Impact 90/300, a riveting documentary by Alumna/Director Elizabeth Gray Bayne, profiles 25 of them.

* The Center for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion came to this approximation based on data from archives, staff, faculty, alumni and admissions. The College didn't officially start tracking this information until the 1980s.

Originally created for the recent 90/300 Exhibition at ArtCenter DTLA, the film reflects on the lack of diversity among students and faulty at ArtCenter, while celebrating the Black alumni who’ve gone on to have meaningful careers.

As part of ArtCenter’s commitment to make our College more diverse, equitable and inclusive, we're re-releasing film and and expanding the interviews to amplify Black voices and hear what they have to say about the challenges navigating an education where their experiences and histories are rarely reflected in the curriculum, faculty or student body.

What does it mean to be a Black artist? The film poses that question and more about race, diversity and how we can do better — as a school and as a creative community.
