Meet Juniper Jones (they/them), BA, Fine Art

Fine Art student Juniper Jones came to ArtCenter with a big idea: to learn to create a larger-than-life image — something beyond what they'd experienced in their hometown of Detroit.

“It's really important to me; it’s why I’ve enrolled in the classes I’ve taken so far,” they say. “I also had a curiosity to go to California one day and extend my understanding of what art could be in a completely different place — that's what ArtCenter has been thus far."

In the Fine Art Department, Juniper has been encouraged to stretch their skills by continuing to ideate and experiment across different mediums — from sculpture to painting to printmaking.

I had a curiosity to extend my understanding of what art could be in a completely different place — that's what ArtCenter has been.

The Fine Art faculty at ArtCenter, who are artists themselves, have been instrumental in connecting Juniper with galleries and other creatives. "It allowed me to have different arts activations during Frieze Los Angeles, which was really big and really special," they say.

ArtCenter's prime location has informed and inspired Juniper's art. "This is a one-stop shop: I'm in Pasadena to go to school, but I'm just outside of Los Angeles, which means I have quick access to a lot of galleries, community and the art scene at large.”

Juniper's current practice focuses on the past, exploring community and collective memory through personal artifacts, like photographs, bedsheets and pillowcases.

"I think it's these domestic things that we overlook in our everyday lives that have a history and a very precious stain that permeates through time," they say. "It's a lot more resonant for future viewers than the things that we choose to preserve in between plates of glass behind a frame."
