Graduate Art Seminar: Heji Shin

Heji Shin (b. 1976, Seoul, Korea). She studied at the Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften (Faculty for applied sciences) in Hamburg and currently lives and works in New York. Her editorial and fashion photography has been published in Die Zeit (DE), Vogue Japan, Dazed and Confused (UK)), Harper’s Bazaar (US), Interview Magazine (US) and Purple (Fr), among many others. She has contributed to Frieze Magazine (UK) and her work was featured on the cover of Artforum Magazine (US).

In 2012, her photographs were used to illustrate the best-selling sexual education book “Make Love”, which was translated in 7 languages and distributed worldwide.

Her work has been shown internationally in many galleries and art fairs, among others Real Fine Arts gallery, New York, US (2013 and 2016), Galerie Bernhard, Zurich, Switzerland (2016) and Reena Spaulings (2017), New York, US (2018). In 2018, she presented solo exhibitions at Galerie Buchholz, Berlin, Germany and Kunsthalle Zurich (Zurich, Switzerland).

She has participated in several group exhibitions, including Statens Museum For Kunst, Kopenhagen, Denmark, Palais de Tokyo (FR), Museo Made Napoli (IT).

In 2018 she participated in group shows at Barbara Gladstone, New York, US, Green Naftali gallery, New York, & Buchholz gallery, New York, US. She participated in the 2019 Athens Biennale in Athens, Greece, 2019 Biennal OpenArt and the 2019 Whitney Biennale at the Whitney Museum, New York, US.

The Graduate Art Seminar is a forum for graduate students and members of the ArtCenter community to enter into dialog with internationally recognized artists, critics, and art historians. The Seminar is a core component of ArtCenter's Graduate Art program. The Seminar is also free and open to the public.

ArtCenter's Graduate Art program is based on intensive studio practice and rigorous academic coursework. The program is distinguished by its low faculty-to-student ratio that provides students with the attention and feedback they need to refine and achieve their artistic goals. Faculty and students are artists working in all genres—film, video, photography, painting, sculpture, performance and installation. A significant number of alumni have achieved national and international acclaim and often return to share their insights and expertise as visiting faculty and guest lecturers.
