The Bureau of Linguistical Reality is a public participatory artwork by artists Heidi Quante and Alicia Escott focused on creating new language as a way to better understand our rapidly changing world due to manmade climate change and other Anthropocenic events. The vision of the artwork is to generate new words to express what people are feeling and experiencing as the world around us rapidly changes due to climate change. We will be using these new words to facilitate conversations about the greater experiences these words are seeking to express in order to further a greater cultural shift around climate change. Just as new maps will need to be drawn to reflect a world altered by climate change, new words need to be created in order for us to discuss a world rapidly being altered by climate change.
The Bureau of Linguistical Reality will be in residence under the auspices of The ArtCenter Dialogues, a lecture series made possible by a generous endowment from the Toyota Motor Corporation. The series brings eminent speakers to the College from a wide variety of art, design and educational backgrounds to inspire creativity and thoughtful discussion, and to broaden perspectives.
