Helen Molesworth, chief curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, offers a behind-the-scenes look at her new exhibition about Black Mountain College—the first comprehensive exhibition on the subject to take place in the United States.

The curator’s talk is part of the Wind Tunnel Lecture Series and ArtCenter Dialogues.

For Molesworth, Black Mountain College’s mythic status—as the birthplace of the neo-avant-garde and the site of legendary collaborations by Robert Rauschenberg, John Cage and Merce Cunningham—has been an impediment to a more complete understanding of its history. The exhibition Leap Before You Look: Black Mountain College 1933–1957, aims to get beyond the mythology to the actual lived history and art produced there.

Featuring individual works by more than 50 artists, the show will run at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles Feb. 21–May 15, 2016.
