“Nature’s Whip,” a new sculpture created by the fine artist known as Shark Toof is available for public viewing in the Hutto-Patterson Exhibition Hall as part of OUTSIDEIN: The Ascendance of Street Art in Visual Culture, an expansive indoor and outdoor exhibition through May 1st, 2016 at multiple venues in Pasadena.

Inspired by the artist’s memories of his childhood imagination, “Nature’s Whip” is intended to “be transportive in a cerebral context.” The spray-painted sculpture is constructed from random car and truck parts including a hood, grill, bench seat, bucket seat, steering wheel and stereo.

“Viewers might remember a journey of their own or be inspired to travel in both a literal sense or creatively,” said Shark Toof about the impact of “Nature’s Whip.”

“Shark Toof’s piece has added something very special to the exhibition and works brilliantly as a sculpture that addresses surface and brings amazing color to the gallery,” said Illustration Department Chair Ann Field who conceived of the OUTSIDEIN exhibition.

A Los Angeles native, Shark Toof earned a BFA from ArtCenter in illustration in 1998. He says he grew up in a wild, wild west atmosphere in the inner city of the 80s. “I made the best of it; skateboarding, making art, painting graffiti,” he said.

“To be recognized by the school I love is a complete honor,” he said. “Especially when street art and graffiti have only recently become somewhat accepted.”

Also featured in the OUTSIDEIN exhibition are artists Olivia Bevilacqua, David Flores, CHASE, Robbie Conal, Cryptik, Jeanne Detallante, Shepard Fairey, James Jean, Geoff McFetridge, RISK, Kenny Scharf and Jeff Soto, who is also an ArtCenter alumnus.

In addition to Field, the curatorial team includes author G. James Daichendt and Alyce de Roulet Williamson Gallery Director Stephen Nowlin.

The Hutto-Patterson Exhibition Hall is located in ArtCenter’s Fine Art and Illustration building at 870 South Raymond Avenue near downtown Pasadena and the Fillmore stop of the Metro Gold Line. Admission to all ArtCenter galleries is free and open to the public.
