Flevoland is the Netherlands’ newest province and one of the largest land-reclamation projects in the world. With almost a third of its territory lying below sea level, the Netherlands (whose very name means “low country”) has a long history of land reclamation. After major floods the Zuiderzee, a large, shallow inlet of the North Sea, was partially drained and closed off to create a lake, the Ijsselmeer, to improve flood protection and also provide additional land for agricultural use. Each colorful patch represents a different crop. To the west, along the dikes of the Ijsselmeer, is one of the largest wind farms in the Netherlands. May 8, 2018.
