Hurricane Sandy (also known as Superstorm Sandy) was the deadliest and most destructive, as well as the strongest, hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, inflicting nearly $70 billion in damage. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 150 kilometers (90 miles) per hour, which hit the Mid-Atlantic States, including New York City, with tropical storm–force winds from Virginia to Canada. A storm surge, combined with astronomically high tides, flooded coastal areas with waters as much as 3 meters (11 feet) above normal. As Sandy moved north along the East Coast, its waves churned up sediment from the continental shelf and left turbid water in its wake. October 30, 2012.
