After heavy rains on saturated ground in the Midwest and Great Plains in late April and early May 2019, the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers flooded near Saint Louis. These false-color images were constructed from a combination of visible and infrared light to make the flooding easier to see. More intense rainfall events and regional increases in precipitation linked to climate change are increasing the risk of extreme runoff and flooding in some locations in the Mississippi River Basin.
