China’s Shanghai metropolitan area has expanded into the East China Sea through land-reclamation techniques, such as capturing outflowing sediment with seawalls and relocating large amounts of sand. Well over 570 square kilometers (220 square miles) were added from 1985 through 2016. These images show further growth through July 2019. The circular feature, on reclaimed land near the tip of the peninsula, is Dishui Lake. With continued sea-level rise, it is unclear what will happen to this new land. July 29, 2019.
