With a background in interaction design and technology R&D, Ian Sands has 20 years of experience inventing, designing and envisioning next-generation software solutions. Sands spent 15 years at Microsoft, where he held a variety of design and leadership positions with Microsoft Research, MSN, MSNBC and Office Labs. In 2004, he founded the Envisioning group and drove Microsoft’s 10-year productivity vision and strategy. In 2010, he left Microsoft and founded Intentional Futures. Initiatives included the Big History Project and strategic work with the Gates Foundation. Sands sold his share of the company in 2013 to cofound Pilot Lab, a software incubator and design consultancy. Leveraging a lab-for-hire model, he partners with the likes of Delta Air Lines, Microsoft, Pearson, Skype, Spotify and the private office of Bill Gates. He has won several design awards and filed over 20 patents, with seven granted so far.
