Jeffrey J. Smith launched his freelance career in 1980 with a “Time” magazine cover portrait of Francois Mitterand, a “New York Magazine” cover of a Roger Black subway platform and a “Songwriter Magazine” portrait of John Lennon. He painted Mikhail Gorbachev for the cover of “Newsweek” magazine, his cover for the “The New York Times’ Sophisticated Traveler” was a Society of Illustrators silver medalist; his work for “Field & Stream” and for a James Ellroy story both earned gold. Smith created 22 paintings for “Shadow Knights,” “The Secret War Against Hitler,” published by Simon & Schuster; 22 illustrations for an Elmore Leonard serial; and he was among the illustrators in the 2015 exhibition, “Bravery and Sacrifice: NYPD Heroes 9/11 and Beyond,” whose artwork helped pass the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act. Smith continues to field assignments for national magazines, while teaching illustration full-time at ArtCenter.
