In 2000, Philip H. Hays received the ArtCenter Lifetime Achievement Award and was inducted into the New York Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame for his outstanding achievements as both an illustrator and educator. Hays received countless awards from prestigious institutions at home and abroad. His illustrations appeared in magazines from "Mother Jones" and "Playboy" to "Sports Illustrated" and "Esquire." His work was also shown at the New York Historical Society; Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum; and galleries and exhibitions around the world. Several of his illustrations reside in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the Smithsonian. During his lifetime, Hays dedicated considerable time to arts education. From 1959 to 1970, he was chairman of the Illustration Department of the School of Visual Arts, and from 1978 until his retirement in 2003, he held the same position at ArtCenter.
