After 15 years as a senior art director with N.W. Ayer & Son, one of the nation’s leading advertising agencies, Donald R. Kubly returned to ArtCenter to take the reins as its director. In 1969 Kubly was named the second president of ArtCenter and helped guide the college to its prestigious standing in the world of art and design today. During his 16-year tenure, enrollment at ArtCenter nearly doubled, growing to over 1,200 in six departments. In 1976, he led the College’s move to a dramatic location in the San Rafael Hills, just above the Rose Bowl. After Kubly officially retired in 1985, he maintained an active and valuable role as a consultant and mentor. Beyond his legacy at the College, Kubly is also remembered for his military service in World War II. As part of the Army Air Corp, he flew more than 80 combat missions.
