As a surfer, concert promoter, muralist and multimedia designer, John Van Hamersveld is a hard man to categorize. Always eclectic, he was responsible for some of the most notable imagery of his age: the classic poster for "The Endless Summer," which initiated the Day-Glo poster fad of the 1960s; album covers for the Beatles and the Rolling Stones; posters for Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead for Pinnacle Production Company (of which he was a founder); and a 360-foot mural, commissioned for the 1984 Olympic Games that hung halfway around the Los Angeles Coliseum and was seen by millions. He also designed the trademark for Contempo Casuals stores, the Fatburger chain, and the iconic T-shirt for the Rolling Stones’ 1994 Voodoo Lounge tour. In 2014, Van Hamersveld was inducted into the Surfing Walk of Fame, which honors influential figures who've shaped the sport on and off the waves.
