Demonstrating the vitality of a new wave of British innovators who are extending concepts of architecture, Space Invaders is a major international touring exhibition that was launched in 2001 at the Experimental Design Biennale in Lisbon. Space Invaders will make its U.S. debut at the Williamson Gallery. The exhibition's co-curators are Lucy Bullivant, an architecture critic & exhibition curator based in London and editorial collaborator to ARCHIS, DOMUS & World Architecture magazines, and Pedro Gadanho, an architect, teacher, and director of the Center for Urban Culture, Porto, Portugal. According to Bullivant, "Architecture as a creative profession has been revolutionised by an increasing engagement with local and global urban culture, and its tactics are more and more those that work in the visual arts, graphic design, advertising and art direction. It now employs materials and production methods that are frequently borrowed from other specialist areas, giving architectural projects a richer repertoire of meanings. There is a shift in emphasis from the design of isolated buildings that refuse to refer to context, to the much more interactive creation of built 'landscapes' and temporary or quickly assembled environments. In the process, the boundaries between functions are becoming increasingly fluid and flexible, reflecting changing lifestyles. The idea of eternal value has been replaced by a desire to communicate ideas about culture in the here and now." Space Invaders features a selection of international projects, including the work of three practices based outside the UK. The exhibition includes photographs, drawings, sketches, visualizations, CAD images, video clips of the development of architectural projects, and models. Each practice is represented by a number of recent projects, including a custom - made exhibit expressing the architects' philosophy and way of working. A series of video interviews with the directors of each practice have been produced especially for Space Invaders, giving a unique insight into each practice's creative world. The layout of the exhibition is designed to highlight the diverse interests and personalities of the individual practices. The fifteen architectural practices chosen for Space Invaders are: Adjaye Associates, Atopia, Block, dECOi, de Rijke Marsh Morgan (dRMM), East, FAT, Foreign Office Architects (FOA), General Light and Power (GLP), Klein Dytham Architecture (KDa), muf, Piercy Conner, softroom, s333, and Urban Salon. The Space Invaders gallery installation has been designed by Urban Salon. A special public opening reception for Space Invaders will take place Friday, October 11, from 6 to 10 pm. During those hours eight Pasadena cultural venues will be hosting Pasaden ArtNight, free open-houses connected by free shuttle buses. Participants include Art Center, Armory Center for the Arts, Armory Northwest, Norton Simon Museum, Pacific Asia Museum, Pasadena Museum of California Art, Pasadena Museum of History, and Pasadena Symphony.
