Jack Bankowsky Presents Stephen Shore

American photographer, Stephen Shore has published and exhibited widely for more than four decades. Credited with igniting a new interest in color photography as well as the use of the view camera for documentary work in a series of landmark shows at New York’s Light Gallery in the 1970s, Shore has been accorded one-person exhibitions at institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (1971), where he became the first living photographer to be so honored since Alfred Stieglitz, forty years earlier; Kunsthalle, Dusseldorf (1977); Art Institute of Chicago (1984); the George Eastman House, Rochester, NY (1996); the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2005); and the Jeu de Paume, Paris (2005). Last year, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, opened a major retrospective spanning Shore's full career.

More than two dozen catalogues and books have been devoted to Shore's photographs, including Uncommon Places (Aperture, 1982); American Surfaces ( Schirmer/Mosel, 1999); and Stephen Shore (Phaidon, 2008). Shore authored The Nature of Photographs (John Hopkins University Press, 1998), and a selection of his photos, Factory: Andy Warhol, appeared from Phaidon in 2016. He is represented by 303 Gallery, New York; and Sprüth Magers, London and Berlin. Since 1982, he has been the director of the Photography Program at Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY.

The Graduate Art Seminar is a forum for graduate students and members of the ArtCenter community to enter into dialog with internationally recognized artists, critics, and art historians. The Seminar is a core component of ArtCenter's Graduate Art program. The Seminar is also free and open to the public.

Note: The Seminar typically takes place on Tuesday evening’s at 7:30 p.m. throughout the Fall and Spring terms, however, Shore’s visit will take place on a Thursday.

ArtCenter's Graduate Art program is based on intensive studio practice and rigorous academic coursework. The program is distinguished by its low faculty-to-student ratio that provides students with the attention and feedback they need to refine and achieve their artistic goals. Faculty and students are artists working in all genres—film, video, photography, painting, sculpture, performance and installation. A significant number of alumni have achieved national and international acclaim and often return to share their insights and expertise as visiting faculty and guest lecturers.
