Department Chair, Undergraduate Illustration
“Our new illustration curriculum is idea-based, design-conscious and linked to pop culture,” says Field. “It’s not about a single technique or style but formulating a personal vocabulary for visual communication.”
She graduated from Brighton College of Art in Sussex, England, where she was mentored by British illustrator Raymond Briggs of the Snowman children’s books and movie. She then illustrated for the London Evening Standard, Mademoiselle and Vogue Italia before working with renowned fashion illustrator Antonio Lopez in the Dominican Republic. She settled in Los Angeles in the 1980s and started Ann Field Images.
According to Field, “Illustration fulfills a central role in modern visual communication. With the rapid advancement of technology, new and greater opportunities have been created for the illustrator willing to accept the challenge of mastering both technical and entrepreneurial skills. These illustrators will be able to reach and influence a greater and more diverse audience through the power of the visual image.”
For more than 20 years, her name has been synonymous with award-winning collages and bright illustrations that cross the disciplines of design, photography and illustration. She has been featured in Communication Arts and Step Inside Design and received awards from the Society of Illustrators in New York, American Illustration, Print and Graphis. Her clients include Christian Dior, Levi’s, Target, Mattel, Hard Rock Hotel, Nike and Lexus.
Field has co-authored three books and lectured and led workshops extensively throughout the United States for the design and illustration communities. She was the president of Icon, the illustration conference, and on the advisory board of AIGA Los Angeles. Her work is in the permanent collection of the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
